My room faced the main street so I could hear a lot of noise during the night, eg, drunks screaming, police sirens... Maybe sound-proofing on the walls and windows would help.

Bad unsafe area.Decided to check out early next morning.Ice cold room -central heating not working. Did report immediately-Nothing done about it . No central heating-ice cold room.

The area is the "rough" area. However, we do not have any problems eventhough it's just us 3 girls. The pictures looked better than the actual room. Because it is an old hotel, the rooms are in dire need of a refurbishments. The toilet flush doesn't work.

Hotel had wonderful, original art deco features which gave the place lots of character. The owener and staff were very friendly and welcoming. Wonderful art deco bathroom , all the original features.

It was very cheap to stay there, therefore a great value since the service was very good. However-- being low on amenities and in a rather shady location makes the Essex Hotel not my first choice, next time. The staff was very helpful, pleasant to talk with and ask questions to.

The location is within easy reach of most tourist venues but the room was noisey all night and the street life at night is scarey. The staff was very nice and helpful, a pleasure to talk with. Reminded me of a older hotel in a large city in Europe where the noise may be more common.
